Here is the official video for M83‘s ubiquitous summer hit ‘Midnight City‘ coinciding with the release of the album ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming‘ this week.

directed by French duo Fleur & Manu; the video follows a group of gifted children running away from their captors with Los Angeles acting as a backdrop. Anthony Gonzalez‘s recent relocation to LA may have played a part on the choosing of a location.

PPS: If you're at all interested in the backstory about this girl (who's actually named Lizzie Grant, is from New York, and tried and failed to break into the pop scene in 2009 - back when she had smaller hair, less gorgeously ducky lips, and no backing from the record industry). This song, released online, has gone totally viral. It was even been named single of the year before it was released. But there are speculations that its release and spread were artfully manipulated by her industry backers..Indeed, I tried to find an interview with the girl on youtibe, and could not find a single clip of the girl talking... Anyway, I don't think it matters, the song is beautiful.

Dubstep recommendations?

This was playing on the background of Adam's video of their Road Trip this summer (dubiously titled: "East Infection"). Pretty great video in every way (incl bc the Florida house features prominently!). I haven't been able to stop listening to this, esp while at the computer. Adam has a good blog post on these guys. Alex, any further recommendations of stuff that sounds like this?

'Rome'

From a wonderful collabo album entitled "Rome" by DJ Danger Mouse and Italian classical and film composer Daniele Luppi (check out the cool-looking graphics at his website). They've created an beautiful, aching, honey-textured album whose tracks are lassoed together with Kill Bill/Spaghetti-Western themes.
I think the album is best listened to in its entirety, rather than track-by-track, but these two are pretty stand-out to me.
It's been on the background as I work for a couple of weeks now!

Amy Winehouse and Mos Def performance

Hey, you know what? Mos Def will be changing his name in 2012. To Yasiin.
Here's what he says: I'm actually doing it. That's it. Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years, it's a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment, and I feel I've done quite a bit with that name. [But] it's time to expand and move on.

Yasiin is a name in the Qur'an's 36th surah, one of its most important verses. The rapper converted to Islam in his teens. "[I don't want] to deal [any more] with having any moniker or separation between the self that I see and know myself as," Mos Def said.

So there you go. Also, fun fact, he has the same birthday as you, Alex.
